If you’re getting the message ‘Key ID Incorrect’ and your Nissan car won’t start, this is for you. Even though your car is giving you the ‘Key ID incorrect’ message, you can use it if you follow our instructions. Why is my Nissan telling me ‘Key ID Incorrect?’ This problem is most common on the Nissan Qashqai, but we also see it on the Nissan Juke, Nissan Note and Nissan Micra models. In fact, if your key is similar to this one, you need this information. In the olden days when you turned a car off, it went to sleep and rested until you turned the ignition again and woke it up. These days, the car sits and listens constantly, trying to detect your smart key. This is why once you are inside the car, it already knows you have the car key, all you need to do is press the start button. However, when ‘Key ID Incorrect‘ is shown, your car can’t detect the key. For some reason the automatic system that Nissan have designed isn’t working. This is normally one of three reasons Nissan Won’t Start Checklist Key ID Incorrect – Reason number One – Key Battery Low The first and simplest reason is your car key battery. When did you last change it? If you did change it, how good was the battery you put inside the key? It may be that the car can’t detect the key. It’s calling out to the key and waiting for a response, but your key doesn’t have the energy to answer! Faulty, cheap, low quality key batteries, are the biggest cause of problems we see in all makes of proximity or ‘smart’ keys. We find it unbelievable that a £15,000 car, has a penny car key battery fitted inside the car key. So buy a recognised brand Click Here to Buy these Batteries on Amazon Key ID Incorrect – Reason Two – Faulty Key This could be for a number of reasons. Obvious Damage to the key If someone has been heavy handed when changing the key battery, a wayward screwdriver can damage the key. You must be careful when changing the key battery, read more here. Invisible Damage to the key What do we mean invisible damage? Sometimes there’s no obvious reason for the ‘key ID Incorrect’ message. Your car key will look immaculate inside, with a fresh new key battery. However, we’re seeing these Nissan remote keys just die, with no obvious damage. Maybe the key has been dropped one too many times? The only answer is to replace the key with a new one. Water Damage to the key If your car key has taken a swim, then it’s bad news I’m afraid. Electronics and water have never been friends, and once wet, it’s a race against time to dry your car key out. You can save it, but you must be quick. If your key has been wet in the past, there will be tell-tale signs. Normally a white ‘tide-mark’ is obvious. Then there’s a green tinge that will develop and turn into white ‘rust’. Lastly, good old fashioned brown rust is a giveaway. All of these will cause ‘Key ID Incorrect’! Key ID Incorrect – Reason Three – The Key isn’t programmed! Did the key ever start the car? We see this a lot, just after the car has been sold. Sometimes you’re given two keys, but you’ve only tested one to to see if it works! When the key is brand new, it needs programming with specialist diagnostic equipment. What is car key programming? This is a really common reason for the ‘Key ID incorrect’ message. Maybe the car sales ordered the key from Nissan, but didn’t have time to get it coded, or someone forgot. Either way, if the key needs programming, no problem. After 10 minutes and 30 seconds, switch off the light by turning the key. Restart the key, then wait another 10 minutes and 30 seconds before turning it off once more. Thirdly, repeat the procedure. To program the key, turn it back to the on position. In order to test your new key, start the engine. Over three years ago we spotted this unusual Nissan key stuck in ignition problem. I was at our shop in Lincoln, cut a new key for a Nissan Qashqai and started to programme it. However half way through key programming, the new key wouldn’t come out of the lock! Three years on we fix over thirty Nissan locks every month and hear from hundreds of frustrated owners. We also hear about how customers plan to fix the problem on the cheap. Sometimes it turns out ok, other times not so well. This is all about what NOT to do when you have this unusual Nissan problem. Want to ask us some questions? Click here to find out more about our Nissan Lock Repair service. What causes the Nissan Key Stuck in ignition problem? There’s an important part in the ignition that develops a sharp edge. When the key is pulled out of the lock, this sharp edge grabs the key, scratching and marking it. This is similar to a fish barb on a hook. The sharper the edge gets, the more difficult it becomes to pull the key out. Here are five tips to save you lots of pain, time and money. Our Top 5 Tips of what NOT to do. Things to Avoid Number One – ‘File away the problem’ About two years ago we got a lock in the mail. We’d already been fixing them by post for over a year, so this was nothing unusual, However, this lock had a needle file stuck inside the lock! The owner had been reading on a forum about a fix for this tricky Nissan key stuck in ignition problem. The advice was to ‘gently file away the sharp edge with a small needle file’. There are a couple of problems with doing this. Firstly, the part that develops the problem, the ‘dust cover’ as it’s known, is a really important part of the lock. When it’s working correctly, it does two things. Firstly it lets the car know when the key is in the ignition, which then tells the car whether the car key buttons are allowed to work. When the dust cover is filed away (as the suggested on the forum), the car can no longer tell if the key has been pulled out of the lock. It thinks it’s still inside, so won’t let the buttons on the key work. The other problem is that the file is very sharp, and the worn edge is also sharp. When they meet, the file gets stuck! No amount of pulling will get the file out. This now means you have a car you can’t drive anymore, because a file is inside the lock. You can’t even drive the car to a local garage to get it fixed. Here’s a video we made about one had sent to us. Things to avoid Number Two – Fit a second-hand lock. Now I’m all for saving money. Second-hand parts can be a big saving, especially when they are in good condition. However, we’ve had several customers visit us that had fitted a used lock, just months before they came to us. On both occasions the replacement lock was fine for a few months and then the key started sticking again, just like the original lock that came with the car. In fact, fitting a used lock from another car introduces another big problem for you. If you lose your car keys, how are you going to get a key made for the random ignition lock that is now on your car? When the car is in its original state, as from new, all the locks match and it’s easy to replace lost keys. However, when a different lock is fitted, then it becomes a problem and when you get a key cut to the door lock, it won’t fit the ignition. It’s a problem you want to avoid. Lastly, we often order locks off the internet, from scrap yards or on-line breakers. We use them as part of our Nissan key suck in ignition exchange service, refurbishing then so the work like new. Sometimes when they arrive, the key that comes with it is already stuck in the lock! So careful what you buy, as they’re are not cheap at all. If you want to find out more about this service we offer call us on 01522 514141. Things to Avoid Number three – Try a new key blade. In any normal car key lock problem, with just wear and tear, then a new key, cut to original shape is a great idea. We see this problem on Ford car keys, with the blade wearing down and it no longer working the lock anymore. With Ford cars, a new car key will often fix the problem. However, if you put a nice new key into your worn out old Nissan lock, it will get stuck for good. When you see how thin and worn out the old keys are, you can understand what is going on. The sharp edge inside the lock shaves a tiny part of the key blade away when it’s pulled out and gradually the key gets thinner and thinner. However, when you put in a new, full sized key in the lock, it grabs the key tight and there it will most probably stay. On top of this, we’ve heard stories about Nissan selling replacement blades at between £40 and £60 a time! For a key blade….that’s just going to get even more stuck! Don’t do this. Things to Avoid Number 4 – Have the problem diagnosed at the dealer. I’ts a good idea to use the dealer for many of the the more technical problems on all cars for you. Need an ECU programming, or a software update, or a faulty airbag module changing? The dealers have the latest software and it’s understandable for them to diagnose the fault first and then take care of it. But this is a key stuck in the lock, I mean what else can it be? You have a Nissan key stuck in ignition problem, what is there to diagnose? You see dealers need to charge to diagnose the problem, I understand that. So before Nissan fix your problem they will want to diagnose it, at £60 an hour, or more. It’s stuck, the lock is faulty, this diagnostic session is over. Treat yourself to something nice with the £60, or put it away for a rainy day, but don’t waste it on ‘dealer diagnostics’. Rant over Lastly, Tips to Avoid Number 5 – Ignore the problem. I get it. It’s like having toothache. You know there’s something not quite right. It hurts every now and then when you brush your teeth, or chew on a nice crispy roast potato. So you start to use the other side of your mouth, not wanting to spend money on a problem that isn’t stopping you from living. Your Nissan key stuck in ignition problem is the same as your toothache. You have a problem because something is wrong. You can ignore it for sure, but the problem hasn’t cured itself, it just slowly gets worse and worse. Eventually you wake up one Sunday morning when there’s no a dentist open for miles and it’s agony. Why did I ignore it? All you can think about is the pain, and it messes up everything. This is the same as your Nissan problem. You can ignore it. You may get away with it for weeks, maybe a month, but eventually it will get you. One day you’ll need to lock the car, parked in some dodgy public car park, and the key won’t come out anymore. So whoever fixes your Nissan car, don’t avoid it for too long. You’ll get stuck somewhere for good and wish you got it sorted! If you have any questions, either leave them below in the comments or call us on 01522 514141 and we’ll be happy to help.

Yesterday I got key battery low, so I replaced the battery & now the fob doesn’t work, can’t unlock the car. Tried 3 new batteries too. Spare fob works fine. Any ideas? Nissan Ignition key stuck and how we can help you. It’s a strange problem you have, a Nissan ignition key stuck ! It happens on Qashqai, Note and Micra models. We first spotted the problem when a customer asked us for spare key. She wanted a new key for her Qashqai, because she kept getting her ignition key stuck in the lock! When we cut the fresh new key, it was stuck solid, nothing would get it out. Because we’re locksmiths, we took the car ignition off and stripped it down, to release the key blade from the lock. Then we managed a temporary repair, so she could drive the car home. This got us thinking about how to solve the Nissan problem. You’re not alone. Click Here to read about the problems on the Nissan Forum. The problem is caused by a few of the parts wearing down and one of them getting a sharp edge. It acts like a fishing hook barb, the harder you pull the key out, the more the lock grabs hold of the key. This is why sometimes, if you gently tease it out, it will come eventually. Because we’re engineers, and have friends that are designers, we had worn parts re-made. We believe they’re far superior to the original part, ours being made of Stainless Steel. We’ve tested the key over 7000 times in and out of the lock, in a single week. After this testing, we stripped the lock back down, there wasn’t any wear, so we’re very happy with the repair. I’m local, how will you fix my ignition key stuck in my car lock? Perfect. Just drive the car too us and we’ll do the rest. We’ll put the car in our workshop, remove the ignition key stuck in the lock, strip it down and replace all the worn parts. What does is cost ? The whole job costs £170, inc Vat. Do I get two new keys? We replace the worn key blades and screw them into your plastic part of the key. Do I need to book in? Yes please. We normally have spaces the same day, but sometimes we get very busy. It’s best to call us before coming along. Will my ignition key be different key to the door? No, we’ll match the ignition to the door, just as you have already. I’m not local, is there anything you can do for me? Yes. Every week we help people from all over the UK and Ireland, with a Nissan ignition key stuck or sticking. It’s very simple, you have two choices. Yes, I can live without my car for a few days… Perfect. In that case you can send us just your ignition lock. We don’t need the car. However if you know straight away that you can’t be without your car for 2-3 days, just skip down to the next section called ‘Help, I just can’t live without my car’. It’s a bit further down the page. How do I get the lock off? We’ve made several YouTube videos to help you. It shows very simply, how to carefully take the ignition off. Just look up Nissan Qashqai on our YouTube channel. Click here to read all about how to remove the lock Seriously…I wouldn’t know where to start with taking the lock off No problem. We completely understand. It’s no different from us trying to do what you do every day. So, in this case, do you have a good local garage that can take it off for you? If you do and, you can leave the car with them, just ask them to take it off and then you send it to us. We’ll fix it by post and then send it back. When it gets fitted it will work straight away. How much does this postal service cost? We charge £180 in total, which includes special delivery postage. In 95% of all cases, we’ll turn the lock round quickly, sending it back the same day. Not fast enough? Maybe you need our ‘Nissan Donor Lock service’ below. Help. I can’t live without my car It’s fine, we understand. When you’re busy with life, you need to be able to get about. We have a service to suit you. We can send you a reconditioned lock, by post. It’ll be built to the same shape of key you already have. This way, the key we send you will fit your car door lock. All you’ll need to do, is have the lock we send you fitted, then your worries are over. How do you make the key the same shape as mine? Simple. You give us your car registration number, then we’ll build the lock up to suit your key. It’s the same as idea as when Nissan order a new lock in for you. Can any garage fit the lock you send me? Yes. It’s held on with two bolts and is plugged in to three wires. Once it’s unplugged and the shear-bolts have been tapped around with a punch and hammer, all that needs to be done is swap the electronic key reader from the old lock to the new one. Then bolt the new lock on, plug it all in, and the car will run! Do I need my keys re-programming? No. it’s the same as getting a new exhaust or brakes. The lock part is metal and doesn’t have any clever electronics at all. The lock has a key reader around it and this just needs to be removed and put on the lock we send you. There’s just one screw holding it on, so it’s nice and easy to do. Next, you simply need to take the old worn key blades out and put our new ones in your key. You do this by unscrewing a small black screw on the key head. Once you’ve swapped the blades over, just tighten the screw back up. Do I need new key blades? Yes. The old blades are worn and if you use them in the new lock, you’ll have problems after a while. By using new blades, in the refurbished lock, everything will line up inside the lock perfectly, it will work like a dream. Does it cost more if you send us out a lock first? Initially yes. You’ll need to pay £280. We put a £100 surcharge on the normal price of £180. However, once we get the worn lock back, we’ll refund the £100 back to your card. So really, it’s the same price. The only reason we charge you more up front, is to make sure we get the worn lock back. We then fix it and use it for the next customer who’s having Nissan ignition key stuck problems, just the same as you. Does it come with a warranty? Yes, just like the new ignition from Nissan, it comes with one year’s warranty. However, we’re very happy with this repair and have confidence it will last far longer. What do I do next? Just call us with your car registration and we’ll do the rest. 01522 514141 Agree it doesn't make sense that you can lock/unlock and control the tailgate from a distance, yet unless the key is touching the start stop button it says no key detected when attempting to start the car. Hi , I have something coming up key system fault pic of steering wheel and button on dash and a red car with a key inside flashing. Tried changing batteries rubbing key fob. Disconnecting actual battery for car.
Nissan Qashqai is a reliable road companion, but its a machine with hundreds of interconnected parts, and like any other machine it sometimes fail to deliver normal operation. In this article we go through most common causes of Qashqai’s breakdown and how you can fix the problem. Nissan Qashqai second generation J11 – (photo by Nissan) The most common causes that hinders normal starting operation of your Qashqai are dead key fob battery, dead 12v battery, corrosion on battery terminals, bad alternator, clogged fuel filter, broken starter, blown fuse, empty gas tank, immobilizer error or any fault in the electrical system. 1. Weak Battery If your Qashqai’s engine won’t crank or cranks very slowly, then the most likely culprit is a weak or dead 12v battery. Investigating more closely and doing a battery voltage test will clarify whether the starting problem is due to the battery. A test can be done to measure the voltage between the battery poles, check the acid level and assess the condition of the starter battery. If a new car battery has been installed, the battery may not have yet reached its full capacity. There is nothing to worry about. A new battery only develops its full capacity over time. Test 12v battery The voltage of the battery on your Nissan Qashqai can be measured precisely with a multimeter. Before the test, the multimeter is set to the voltage range of the battery and connected to its plus and minus poles. Successful testing of the car battery, checking the voltage, usually results in values of approx. 12 to 13 volts. Values above 14 or below volts require an expert assessment of the condition of the car battery. Because the battery may have a defect with these measured values and must be replaced. Jump start Nissan Qashqai If dead battery is the reason for the breakdown of your Qashqai, you can easily jump start it using jumper cables and a healthy battery from another vehicle, or using a battery booster if available. First connect red cable to the positive terminal of your Qashqai’s dead battery, then to the positive terminal of donor battery. Next connect black cable to the negative terminal of donor battery, then to the bare metal in the engine bay of your Qashqai. Start the donor vehicle and then your Qashqai. Remove the cables in reverse order. Illustration for jump starting procedure 2. Corrosion on battery Corrosion on the contacts of your car battery leads to loss of contact and reduced current flow, which means that your engine can no longer start properly. To know if your Qashqai’s starting problems are from dirty battery contacts, you need to investigate them. If you lift the rubber covers over the two battery terminals, you can check the terminals for corrosion. If you discover white deposits or silvery-green deposits, but no further cracks or damage, you do not have to replace the battery, just clean it. Clean battery corrosion To clean the battery on your Nissan Qashqai, you have to remove the pole cables first, which requires no special knowledge, just a little concentration, as the order is very important. First remove the black cable from the negative pole. If the pole clamp is very tight, you can open it with pliers. We advise against using metal pliers, but if you use them, you must make sure that you do not touch any other parts of the body. Next you can unplug the red positive pole cable. Once the battery has been removed from the circuit, you can start cleaning the corroded battery. After cleaning, reconnect the terminals. 3. Weak key fob battery If your Qashqai has push start/stop button, then its possible that your vehicle may not start due to weak key fob battery. Don’t worry, you can still start your vehicle – the battery is only used to send the signal for locking/unlocking. If the key fob battery is empty, the door no longer locks or unlocks at the push of a button. The doors must then be opened manually. The immobilizer is controlled by a passive transponder. Passive means, among other things, that the transponder in the key does not need its own power source. How to start Nissan Qashqai with dead key fob battery If you have a model of Qashqai which only has a key fob with start/stop button and no place to insert a key, then try placing your key fob as close to the start/stop button as you can and then start the vehicle. Tip: You can try starting your Qashqai with its second key. It will also rule out any other problem with the first key, for example, water damage. 4. Broken starter motor A starter is a motor for starting the engine of your Qashqai. The average life of a starter motor is about 100,000 to 150,000 miles, and the life will be shortened if the engine is started more frequently. In any case, since the starter motor also has a limited life, it will break down after using the car for a long time, and if the starter motor breaks down, the engine will not start. Symptom: When you turn the key to start the engine of your Qashqai, you will hear a clicking sound, which is the sound of a bad starter motor. And if the starter motor does not work with a healthy battery, suspect a malfunction of the starter. If the starter fails, it usually needs to be replaced with a new one. Temporary fix for starter If the engine does not start due to the starter, the engine may start if you turn the key while hitting the starter motor with something like a stick or metal tool. This workaround is effective when the parts inside the starter are stuck together or the gears are slightly out of alignment. However, it is possible that the starter is nearing the end of its life, so it is recommended that you have it inspected at a dealer or maintenance shop. 5. Defective alternator An alternator is a generator that produces electricity. If your Qashqai’s alternator fails, it will not be able to produce electricity and the battery will not be able to charge. Therefore, even if you think that the cause of the engine not starting is a battery failure and replace the battery, the battery will soon run out and the engine will not start. Alternators rarely break down. In particular, modern cars have improved performance, so it is said that they will last 200,000 to 300,000 miles. Still, it can break down depending on how you use it, and in the case of a used car, the alternator may be quite old. Don’t let your guard down. If the alternator breaks down, it must be replaced with a new alternator. 6. Clogged fuel filter The fuel filter of your Qashqai does not wear out like a mechanical part, but it gets clogged by dirt and airborne particles and clogs over time. The permeability of the filter drops, and so does the fuel pressure. To a certain extent this doesn’t matter, but if the fuel filter is too dirty, the engine will no longer perform at full capacity and in some instance may not start at all. Cleaning is not possible, you can only change the filter. 7. Fuel pump failure If your Qashqai’s fuel pump fails, then the engine won’t start. The pump normally ensures that the necessary amount of fuel is passed from the tank to the injection system of the engine with sufficient pressure. Before your fuel pump stops working, it usually becomes noticeable: if your car’s engine breaks down from time to time, the car is difficult to start, the engine jerks a little or the engine performance drops, you should have your pump checked. Wear or contamination of the pump can be the reason for this. If the pump is leaking, a power contact is broken, a line or a pump lever is broken, the fuel pump is usually also noticeable before failure. You can have a defective fuel pump replaced in your workshop. 8. Blown fuse In rare cases, a blown fuse could also be the culprit in the breakdown of your Qashqai. Check all fuses in the fuse box essential for starting the engine. But, be careful when lending a hand yourself to the fuse box! The box is under power and repairs or tests should always be done in a workshop. 9. Defective spark plugs Without functioning spark plugs, the engine will not start. The spark plugs themselves are often not affected by a defect. Instead, plug connections on the ignition system come loose. If only one plug is actually loose, you can fix the problem yourself on site. If a spark plug has failed, it must be replaced in the workshop. 10. Rodent damage Rodent damage can be another reason why your Nissan Qashqai won’t start. The animals crawl under the vehicle and bite through cables and wires. In principle, this can affect all vehicle systems such as the fuel supply, the oil supply or the power supply. The rodent damage can usually be seen quickly by looking into the engine compartment. The damage caused by the rodent bite can be repaired in the workshop. Be prepared for relatively high costs here. 11. Engine failure Although very rare, but it can also be the cause of the breakdown of your Qashqai. If a vehicle has an engine failure, then nothing works anymore. It is not uncommon for the driver of a vehicle to be responsible for such damage. Typical causes include tearing of the timing belt, incorrect fueling, insufficient oil, hydrolock, overheating of the engine, or continuous driving in an excessive speed range. Only an experienced mechanic can diagnose engine failure in a workshop. Use OBD2 scanner for diagnosis Since Nissan Qashqai is equipped with on-board diagnostics (OBD), a fault diagnosis can provide initial indications of where the malfunction is located. To begin troubleshooting, you must first connect the diagnostic tool to your Qashqai. The OBDII connector is usually located under the dashboard. With the wire connected, you should turn the ignition on. But be careful not to start the engine. Most diagnostic devices then ask for some information about the vehicle. It is important that you enter this 100% correctly, otherwise the result of the search may be falsified. In addition to the vehicle manufacturer and model, you usually also have to type in the engine and vehicle ID number. For exact troubleshooting, always check whether the information is correct. Conclusion There are many reasons why your Qashqai may not start. When looking for the trigger, you should always start with the most obvious cause, the empty battery. In any case, it is advisable for laypersons to call a breakdown service or a workshop. In the event of a defect, the latter can directly initiate the repair.
